GoPro recently released a new action camera: the GoPro Max (2025), or the GoPro Max 2. It is an action camera that can film 360 degrees around itself, with which GoPro introduces an alternative to the Insta360 X4. Comparison Insta360x vs. GoPro Max 360

Compared to the Insta360X4, it must be concluded that the new GoPro Max underperforms in most aspects. For example, the Insta360 X4 can shoot 8K resolution images in 360 degrees at 30fps and 4K at 100fps. The GoPro Max 360 is significantly worse in terms of resolution and frames per second. In addition, the GoPro is less waterproof and the storage capacity can be expanded less. In general, almost all specifications are inferior to the Insta360 X4. It is important to note that the new GoPro Max 360 is no less than € 150 cheaper. The GoPro Max 360 is not introduced as the GoPro Max 2, but explicitly as the GoPro Max (2025). In other words, a kind of modernization of the old model from 2019.

New features of the GoPro Max 360

There aren't a ton of new features for the GoPro Max 2. The biggest difference is mainly in the software of the GoPro Max. The difference in hardware is limited.

1. Easier to attach

GoPro has made it easy to place your GoPro Max 360 on a tripod or selfie stick. A ¼'' screw connection has been added to the bottom of the GoPro. This means you no longer need a separate GoPro adapter. Tripods that you use for your camera or smartphone (with phone holder) can now also be used directly for your GoPro, without having to take extra accessories with you.

2. Object tracking

A new feature in the software is object tracking. This allows you to select an object or person with AI. The GoPro then ensures that the object does not leave the frame. Of course, this is only possible as long as the object is in the 360-degree field of view of the camera. This allows you to film cool stunts, for example, without needing a cameraman.

3. CameraFX

While editing, you can use different effects to make your videos more dynamic. For example, rotate the image or make a somersault. Normally, you need complicated editing software for this, but now you can add it to your video with 1 simple click of a button and save yourself a lot of time during editing.

4. Other new features

In addition to the other new features, GoPro has added a number of other new features such as a larger battery and a number of new features within the Quick App that should make it easier to edit your videos. For example, a key framing function that allows you to set exactly where in your video which piece of image should be used.

Conclusion

The GoPro Max 2 has few new useful features or specifications. Compared to the Insta360X4, the GoPro Max 2 performs a lot worse in all areas. The best way we can describe the GoPro Max 2 is a modernization of the GoPro Max. The GoPro Max 2 can hardly be called a model on its own. If you want to buy a 360 degree action camera and the Insta360X4 is too expensive, the GoPro Max 2 may be a good purchase for you.
