Hoe gebruik je een autocue? 5 tips!

Are you struggling to remember your lines during video recordings? Or do you find it difficult to convey your message with enthusiasm when you have to remember a line? An autocue, or teleprompter, might be a good tool. However, using a teleprompter also requires some skill. It's not as easy as it seems. With the following 5 tips, you'll master the autocue in no time.

Navigate quickly

What is a teleprompter?

An autocue is a display onto which text is projected. The text is projected via a mirror in front of a camera or smartphone, without the camera registering it. This allows you to read a video script in the mirror and look directly into the lens, without it being visible to either the camera or the viewer.

#1 Prepare your text yourself

It is important to write the text in your own words. This way your message comes across more naturally and it is easier to read the text. While preparing and writing the text, it is wise to read the text aloud. This way you can reformulate sentences and filter out difficult words.

It is of course also possible that the text was prepared by a colleague. It is important to then rewrite the text in your own words.

#2 Write colloquialisms

Since you read the text (partly) and this should appear as natural as possible, it is important to write the text in colloquial language. Write the text as if you were having a conversation. It is better to skip words like nevertheless or however . Nobody says these words, right? Use everyday and informal words.

In addition, make short sentences, write everything in full (including numbers) and place the subject and verb together. Continue to speak your text out loud while writing, so that you can check and rewrite the text as you write.

3. Set the text correctly

Before you start recording, it's wise to customize the text yourself using an app or computer. This way, you can adjust the font size and playback speed, and ensure the text is displayed to your personal preference. This makes it easier to read.

With apps like the Parrot Teleprompter App ( Apple App Store / Google Play Store ) and BestView ( Apple App Store / Google Play Store ), you can adjust the font size and playback speed. The Teleprompter app (App Store) displays the text on the phone you're filming with. This allows you to film yourself using the selfie camera and read your text aloud simultaneously.

It's useful to have control over the speed of your text. For example, you can slow it down a bit if you make a slip of the tongue. You can use a foot pedal or a Bluetooth remote control for this. With a Bluetooth remote control, you can not only set the tempo but also scroll back or pause the text. A remote control is often included with an autocue, such as the Ulanzi RT02 .

#4 Practice, practice, practice!

Before the video recordings start and the autocue starts running, it is wise to read the text out loud in advance. This way you know where to put the emphasis and you can determine the pace.

Before recording begins, it is wise to practice using the teleprompter. It can take some time to get used to working with an autocue. So run through your text using the teleprompter, so that it runs smoothly during the recording.

#5 Watch your attitude and tone

Remember that a teleprompter serves as a tool. If you simply read the text aloud or rattle it off quickly, your audience will likely tune out quickly. Deliver your message with enthusiasm and passion, and remember that on video, only half your energy and enthusiasm remains. So don't be afraid to deliver your story with full energy or be over the top . Just be careful not to raise your voice.

Good posture is also important. Stand up straight and relax your neck and shoulder muscles. This will make you appear more approachable and professional and prevent you from looking tense.

Not only your posture is important, but also your camera's. You want the image to be straight, so the viewer can focus solely on your story. Use a tripod for optimal results!
