When traveling, a power bank is indispensable. You can charge your devices everywhere, so you will not have to worry about having a flat battery. But what if you travel by plane? Can you take your power bank with you on the flight? How many power banks are allowed on the plane? Read along to find out if you can take your power bank with you on the plane and what you should pay attention to.

Which power bank is allowed on the plane?

According to the rules of the IATA, the International Air Transport Association, you are allowed to take a power bank of up to 100W (27,000 mAh) with you in your hand luggage. If you want to take a power bank above 100W with you, you must request permission from the airline you are traveling with. Batteries larger than 160 Wh are never allowed.

Many manufacturers therefore develop power banks with a capacity that is permitted. The MOJOGEAR ULTRA laptop power bank , for example, has a capacity of 26,800 mAh (100W) and can therefore be taken on an airplane.

Airline Powerbanks toegestaan Maximaal aantal kleine batterijen/powerbanks (≤ 100 Wh) Maximaal aantal grote batterijen/powerbanks (100–160 Wh) Checked baggage? Carry‑on baggage? Opmerkingen

Lufthansa Ja Onbeperkt (volgens IATA), airline‑limiet: max 15 apparaten Max 2 met airline‑goedkeuring Beperkt toegestaan (apparaten ≤ 100 Wh alleen uitgeschakeld) Ja Losse batterijen/powerbanks alleen in handbagage; bescherm terminals tegen kortsluiting

Can I put a power bank in my checked baggage?

Power banks are prohibited in the hold. This is because the battery of a power bank contains the flammable material lithium, which is risky in the hold. So always take your power banks with you in your hand luggage.

Tip: Make sure you have (the information on) the power bank at hand at the airport. This way you prevent the power bank from not being allowed on board at the security check.

How many power banks can I take on the plane?

Sometimes it can be very nice to take multiple power banks with you on holiday. A small and a large one for example. But are you allowed to take multiple power banks on the plane?

You are allowed to take a maximum of two power banks on the plane. Please note that these power banks together are not more than 27,000 mAh. For example, you are allowed to take two power banks of 10,000 mAh on the plane, but not two power banks of 20,000 mAh .

All MOJOGEAR power banks are suitable for taking on the plane. Don't know how many mAh your power bank has? This is often indicated somewhere on the power bank itself. Is this not there? Then check the manual or website of the store/webshop where you bought the power bank, it is indicated there anyway.

How do I know whether my power bank meets the requirements to be allowed on the plane?

Each power bank has a certain capacity. This is expressed in milliampere hours (mAh) or watt hours (Wh). The capacity of your power bank is probably expressed in mAh. Because the official, international unit for this is expressed in watt hours (Wh), both units are often mentioned.

The more mAh, the more power the power bank can provide to your device. You can often see the number of mAh on the back of the power bank. You can also find this in the instructions for use. So check the mAh amount of your power bank(s) carefully before departure.

Maximum Watt Hours Power Bank on an Airplane

If you search the internet for which power bank is allowed on the plane, you will often come across a maximum watt-hour value (Wh). But how do you know how many Wh your power bank has? There is a simple calculation for that:

Take the number of milliamp hours (mAh) of your power bank, multiply it by 3.7 (the nominal voltage of a lithium-ion cell) and divide the result by 1000

A 20,000 mAh power bank then has:

(20,000×3.7) / 1,000= 74 Wh

So this power bank has a capacity of 74 Wh, which is within the allowed limits for the aircraft.

Make sure the power bank is charged

During a security check, you may have to turn on your electronic equipment to show that the power bank is working. Therefore, make sure that the power bank is charged. In addition, it is of course also nice to be able to use the power bank on the plane. A compact travel charger with multiple ports is very handy to charge your power bank, smartphone and another device such as earphones or e-reader at the same time.
