Wireless charging is becoming increasingly popular; almost every phone supports it, and you're seeing cables disappearing more and more. With Qi2, wireless charging becomes even better and faster. You may have already come across some charging products online that claim to support Qi2 charging. But what exactly is it, and what are the benefits? Qi2 chargers or power banks are often more expensive, but for good reason. In this blog post, we'll explain what you can do with Qi2, why it's better than Qi1, how it differs from MagSafe, and which phones support Qi2 charging.

What is Qi2?

Qi is a quality standard for wireless charging. This quality standard is guaranteed by the Wireless Power Consortium. The WPC is an international association of brands that develop the Qi wireless charging standard. This includes more than 300 different brands. This consortium also includes several big names such as Samsung and Apple. All their chargers are therefore also Qi certified. Qi2 is the successor to Qi1. Qi2 can deliver 15W charging power and is equipped with magnets so that your device always lies properly on the charger.

What is the difference between Qi1 and Qi2?

  • Two major differences between Qi1 and Qi2:
  1. Qi2 has magnets → device always lies correctly on the charger
  2. Qi1 doesn't have this
  • Power on iPhones:
  1. Qi1: 7.5W
  2. Qi2: 15W
  • Qi2 chargers (power banks, charging stations) are often more expensive, but for good reason
  • For Android, the charging speed does not change (15W with Qi1 and Qi2)
  • Qi2 magnets ensure more efficient charging (coils are always properly aligned)
  • Devices that support Qi1 can also be charged with Qi2 chargers, but will not benefit from the higher power

What is the difference between Qi2 and MagSafe?

MagSafe is a magnetic mounting system from Apple. The main difference from Qi2, the official WPC standard, is that Qi2 is an open standard, while MagSafe is Apple's proprietary technology.

MagSafe works optimally with Apple devices only, and some MagSafe accessories don't (fully) work with Android. Qi2, on the other hand, is platform-independent and is designed for both Apple and Android devices (from 2024).

Apple also offers a MagSafe charger that can charge up to 25W. This charger is only compatible with the iPhone 16. Qi2 supports charging up to 15W.

Which phones support Qi2?

There are currently only a few phone models that support Qi2 besides iPhones. This is because Qi2 offers limited added value for Android phones.

The following smartphone models currently support Qi2:

  • iPhone 12/13/14/15/16
  • Samsung S25 series
  • OnePlus 13 series
  • HMD Skyline
  • Oppo Find X8 and Find X8 Pro

The Android phones in this list don't have a magnet built into the phone itself. But with a magnetic case, you can still use the magnet in the Qi2 charger or power bank .

There are currently many rumors about Qi 2.2. This is a major upgrade from Qi 2. With Qi 2.2, you can charge at 50 watts, which is almost three times as fast. This also makes it worthwhile for Android smartphone brands to enable support.

Conclusion

Qi2 is a big upgrade for iPhones compared to Qi1. The power doubles from 7.5W to 15W. That's why it's definitely worth switching from Qi1 to Qi2 if you have an iPhone. Do you have an Android phone? Then there's a good chance that your phone doesn't support Qi2 at all. Do you have a Samsung S25 or OnePlus 13, then your phone does support Qi2, but you won't notice any difference in charging speed. You do benefit from the magnet, which means your smartphone stays better connected to a charging station or power bank.
